Freedom of Information Act

British Waterways prides itself on being open and accountable with its many stakeholders. The Freedom of Information Act 2000 is legislation that ensures public authorities are proactive in providing information that is requested. We abide by this Act.

Our publication scheme specifies:-

  • the classes of information which the public authority publishes (or intends to publish)
  • the way in which the information will be published
  • whether the information is (or is intended to be) available free of charge or on payment of a fee

Sometimes we may have to withhold information if we consider that it is necessary to do so for reasons such as confidentiality, national security and commercial sensitivity or for some other legitimate reason. When considering whether or not we have to withhold information we must take into account matters such as the Freedom of Information Act, the Environmental Information Regulations, the Data Protection Act and public interest. When information is withheld we will explain why we have done so.

Information that is up to two years old and remains current has been included in the scheme. The majority of such information is constantly reviewed and updated information will be included as and when it is available. This scheme is not intended to be retrospective and we do not intend to publish certain information in some classes which was created or received by us before 1 January 2004.

Information published under this scheme is held in English only unless otherwise indicated. Information may be translated upon request into other languages but is liable to the payment of a fee.

We have grouped our classes of information under the following broad categories:-
